AACC APPOINTS DR. IRVING TO SERVE ON THE COMMISSION ON ACADEMIC, STUDENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Merrill Irving, Jr., president of Hennepin Technical College, to the Commission on Academic, Student and Community Development effective July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2019. The AACC Board authorizes six commissions consisting of member CEOs or administrators to provide advice to the AACC Board and staff; encourage collaboration among community college entities and organizations; and provide a forum for focused conversations about community college issues and priorities.

In addition, Dr. Irving, Jr. was also elected to AACC’s Presidents Academy Executive Committee, Central Region, for a three-year term. All CEOs of AACC member institutions are automatically members of the Presidents Academy, and three Executive Committee members are chosen to represent specific geographic regions of the United States (Northern Southern, Central, Western, and Pacific Regions). Executive Committee members are elected by the Presidents Academy membership annually.

The AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s community, technical, and junior colleges. The association represents nearly 1,200 two-year, associate degree granting institutions and more than 13 million students. The AACC strives to provide a national voice and advocacy for the community college mission; serve as a national information resource; create opportunities for peer networking and interaction at all levels, professional initiatives, dialogue, and community-building; facilitate collaboration among AACC staff and stakeholders; encourage a shared commitment to the community college movement; and offer leadership and career development opportunities.
