GRACO GRANT BENEFITS HTC MACHINE TOOL TECHNOLOGY

Mazak Donation to Hennepin Technical College

Thanks to a grant of $53,900 from the Graco Foundation, the Hennepin Technical College Machine Tool Technology program will be adding Mazak equipment that will provide students the opportunity to train on machines that are utilized by a growing number of manufacturing companies.

“We appreciate this generous support from the Graco Foundation because we usually do not have the funding to allow us to launch programs that utilize another brand of equipment, such as the Mazak equipment that this grant makes possible,” says HTC Dean Mike McGee, adding that HTC has a long history with Minneapolis-based Graco, Inc. “We’ve done many years of customized training in manufacturing at Graco facilities, and Graco has hired numerous graduates of our machine tool and other manufacturing programs.”

“By helping the college get the Mazak equipment, it’s a win-win for everyone,” explains Eric Galush, manufacturing cell manager at Graco. “HTC has the biggest machining program in the state. Its location makes it ideal for serving our locations in Anoka, Rogers and Minneapolis.” He added that there was a need to have Mazak equipment at HTC because Mazak is the largest presence in the five-state area that includes Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and North and South Dakota.

“We have several complex CNC machines at Graco, and invest a lot on capital equipment,” says Galush. “With 65 percent of the CNC machines at Graco being the Mazak brand, being competent at setting up and running this equipment is of the utmost importance to the company.” He added that the company hired eight machinists from HTC in 2013.

“With the addition of Mazak equipment, our students will be able to train directly on equipment they’ll operate on the job,” says HTC Instructor Bob Lund, who has spent 15 years with the college. “They will be better prepared and require less training when they are hired.” The college’s Machine Tool Technology program offers an A.A.S. degree, diplomas, and certificates.

In addition to its most recent grant supporting the purchase of equipment, the Graco Foundation also provides scholarship funds for HTC students.
