MANUFACTURING SHOWCASE 2014
The First Manufacturing Showcase at HTC a success!
On Thursday, September 18, Hennepin Technical College hosted the second of five Manufacturing Showcases being held across the Twin Cities area addressing the causes, conditions and solutions to the skilled worker shortage affecting the manufacturing industry.
Manufacturing employers, economic and workforce development professionals, business leaders and industry champions listened to a presentation from Bob Kill, President/CEO of Enterprise Minnesota on the result of their 2014 State of Manufacturing survey results.
Bob then joined a panel consisting of Erick Ajax, Co-owner of E.J. Ajax and Sons, Minnesota State Senator Terri Bonhoff, Chair of the senate’s Higher Education Workforce Development committee, and Kelly Pearson, Director of Operations of The Toro Company’s Shakopee manufacturing facility.
Employers focused on a range of solutions, including changing manufacturing’s image to attract more high school students to these excellent careers, and focusing on the “essential” skills of attendance, writing, business computer literacy and teamwork.
Hennepin Technical College was recognized as a leader in helping address this shortage. In surveys, listening sessions and meetings, manufacturers throughout Minnesota have expressed their concern about the skilled worker shortage and its impact on their global competitiveness.
