A Leadership for Life Series

Below you will find the Leadership Series recordings from the 2021-22 academic year. The sessions cover cover various topics related to finance and are presented by Demitri McGee.

Speaker: Demitri McGee, Youth Director and Budget Assessment Coach (Build Wealth MN)

Demitri McGee

Demitri McGee is a certified financial coach/trainer, scholar, and youth community leader. Mr. McGee has worked with Build Wealth as a Youth Director/Financial Coach over the last three years and has assisted over 100 families with financial budgeting, saving, credit rebuilding, and homebuyer preparation. As a supplement to research and practice, Mr. McGee engages in the community by hosting local art shows for youth which promotes a safe place or outlet that allows for freedom of expression, social networking and community building. All three facets work together in helping underserved communities break down barriers that have hindered generations before them by promoting connectedness, creative control, financial freedom, and entrepreneurship.

Consumer Protection & Financial Scams

This session will cover:

  • Scams to watch for: pyramid and internet
  • How to navigate phishing
  • High interest loans
  • Collection tactics
  • Complaint letters and complaint resources

Credit and Impact of Student Loans

This session covers the following topic areas:

  • History and usage of credit
  • Hot to read credit reports
  • How to build credit
  • How credit applies to student loans, how to manage student loans, and types of student loans

Financial Wellness

During the session, Mr. McGee will focus on Credit (What is Credit? How do you build credit? How to reduce debt) and Student Loans (loan types and repayment options).

  • Calculating income
  • Creating an effective savings plan

Planning for the Future

This session will cover:

  • Home ownership
  • Retirement
  • Insurance

Technology and Social Awareness

This session will cover:

  • Online banking
  • Social media etiquette
  • Social appearance etiquette

What is Money?

During the session, Mr. McGee will focus on addressing the question: What is Money? Please note this is the orientation session for many more upcoming financial wellness workshops!

Workplace Professionalism Panel

This session will focuses on professionalism in the workplace with HTC alumni and community partners/employers. Our panelists will cover how professionalism is defined personally and within their workplace. This will also include a series of questions focused on tips, tricks, and insights of how to be your own professional.

Workplace Basic Needs

We will kick off the academic year with a session about basic needs in the workplace. Our special guest speaker will feature Hennepin Technical College's Assistant Director of Human Resources, Daniel Le Guen-Schmidt who will be talking about searching for a job, negotiating salary, navigating a career change and important skills needed in a job.

Workplace Communication

This session will focus on communication in the workplace. We will be talking about the best practices for communication, appropriate communication with colleagues, the use of social media accounts, understanding background differences in communication styles, and adjusting to different styles of communication.

Workplace Self-care

This third session will focus on self-care in the workplace. Adjusting to the environment of a new or changing workplace can challenging. It’s important to take care of yourself while balancing multiple responsibilities inside and outside of the workplace. We want to share helpful self-care tips to make you successful while in the workplace.
