Reed Johnson

Reed Johnson started out looking at a career in diesel mechanics, but quickly realized he’d rather learn about automotive technology instead. After doing some research, he discovered that Hennepin Tech’s Eden Prairie campus offered just what he was looking for.

He didn’t enter the program completely cold: “I had a job working with vehicles during school, so I had experience beforehand,” he said. “Some of the classwork was a refresher for me, but a lot was new.” Not only did he find plenty to learn, he used his education and newly developed skills to compete in SkillsUSA competitions. He eventually won first place in the state of Minnesota and went on to take seventh in Nationals.

Johnson feels that his education at Hennepin Tech prepared him well, not just for SkillsUSA, but for the workforce. “Andy Thul is a great teacher,” he said. “I learned so much from him. I was really well-prepared for the workplace when I was done with school. The price is really fair, you get a lot for your tuition.”

He also has some advice for prospective Hennepin Tech automotive technology students. “Don’t slack off,” he said. “You will pay for it.  Get everything you can out of it. Don’t just sit there. You get what you put into it.”

For Johnson, that means steady employment at a large construction company , but as he notes, he’s had an enviable employment history since attending school: “I’ve turned down more jobs than I’ve taken!”
