Nursing Assistant

To become a Nursing Assistant, just follow the 5 easy steps below. The Nursing Assistant course is typically 5 weeks in length and prepares you to take the Nursing Assistant state exam. The NAR class is also a prerequisite to HTC’s Practical Nursing program.

Step One - Apply to HTC
You can apply to HTC by clicking on the link below or you can download a paper application and send it to the Admissions office in the mail.


Step Two - Take the entrance test
After applying to HTC you will need to call and schedule an appointment for the entrance test.

Step Three - Register for class
After successful completion of the entrance test with a passing score, you will need to register for a specific Nursing Assistant class. This needs to be done with the Registration office on campus, by mail or fax. You will need to turn in your test scores and registration form all at once. (Find a class that fits your schedule by clicking the schedule link below. Search for NURS 1001.)


Step Four - Pay Tuition
The Nursing Assistant course is 4 credits. Learn about the tuition costs and payment options below.


Step Five - Take the state exam
This is your last step after completing the course. Visit the course schedule online for available Nursing Assistant state exam dates or stop by the registration office. (NA Written Test and NA Skills Test).


Nursing Assistant Course Description (NURS 1001)
This course introduces concepts of basic human needs, health/illness continuum and basic personal care skills. It includes theory with skills demonstrated in a supervised laboratory setting and 24 hours of clinical care of selected adult patients in a long term care setting. The role of the nursing assistant in a long term care facility as well as working with various populations is discussed. Upon successful completion of this course the candidate is eligible to take the Minnesota Competency Evaluation for Nursing Assistants. Individuals successfully completing this examination are placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry. (Prereq: Qualifying score on reading and listening assessment test, or equivalent. The ability to lift and move 25-50 pounds. Full-time attendance is required at all sessions).
