Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (Residential) Award Outcomes

  • Install HVAC equipment compliant with local codes.
  • Employ the skills to service and repair HVAC equipment in a timely and cost efficient manner.
  • Practice human relation skills with the diverse population requiring the services of HVAC technicians.
  • Complete the Environmental Protection Agency certification to handle refrigerants.
  • Demonstrate basic tool usage.
  • Apply mathematical, reading, and communication skills essential to the HVAC service industry.
  • Integrate a commitment to ethical and professional behavior in all activities.
  • Distinguish quality standards of products commonly used in professional HVAC operations. 
  • Exhibit knowledge and hands-on ability to perform electrical repairs in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Exhibit knowledge and hands-on ability to perform soldering and brazing techniques in a safe manner.
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet the award requirements to achieve a Minnesota Boiler’s License.
  • Exhibit knowledge of safety equipment used in the HVAC field.
HVAC Commercial Award Outcomes
  • Pass the State of Minnesota 2nd Class C Boiler License.
  • Obtain the EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Handling License.
  • Replace refrigerant system components.
  • Troubleshoot, service, and maintain electrical motors.
  • Troubleshoot, service, and calibrate control circuits for refrigeration and A/C equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, service, and maintain gas heating equipment.
  • Perform combustion test on gas heating equipment.
  • Replace heating systems components, burners, and valves.
  • Adjust service and maintain water systems for HVAC and refrigeration equipment, pumps, valves, and heat exchangers.
  • Adjust, troubleshoot, service, and maintain airflow systems for HVAC equipment, V.A.V. economizers, and air handlers.
  • Use computers and microprocessors to operate, control, and troubleshoot HVAC equipment.
  • Install HVAC and refrigeration equipment to code and manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Solve problems using analytical thinking.
