Policy 01.07

POLICY STATEMENT

Hennepin Technical College is concerned that students in training have available to them the necessary tools, equipment, and instructional materials required for the development of skills, knowledge, and attitudes to successfully enter and advance in their chosen occupational area. In accordance with this concern, the following procedure has been developed for the selection and procurement of program textbooks, workbooks, and classroom reference books to be used in instructional activities within technical education programs.

IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURE

Textbooks/Workbook Approvals/Purchase

  1. Textbooks and workbooks are identified on the course syllabi.
  2. A master list of textbooks and workbooks is compiled from the course syllabi by program and by course. The course syllabi is the control document. The master list shall not be modified unless the course syllabi is modified.
  3. The course syllabi must be updated biennially including the text and reference section. On an exception basis, the text and reference sections may be updated annually after program review and dean approval. The master list must be updated accordingly. The list of textbooks/work-books agreed upon will be used at all program locations.
  4. The bookstore and IMC are provided a copy of the textbook/workbook master list. The bookstore orders the textbooks and workbooks from the master list.
  5. Students purchase textbooks and workbooks from the bookstore master list.
  6. High school textbook/workbook guidelines are:
  1. High school students are not required to purchase textbooks/workbooks.

  2. Textbooks and reference materials used for high school instruction will be purchased through the bookstore, owned by District 287, and catalogued by the IMC.

  3. Workbooks are considered a supply item.

  1. Textbook/workbook guidelines for Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) students taking courses for high school credit are the same as those for high school students.
  2. Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) students taking courses for college credit follow the college program textbook/workbook guidelines.

Classroom Reference Books

  1. Classroom reference books shall be identified and agreed upon at a program meeting.
  2. Availability of budgeted funds for classroom reference books shall be the responsibility of the dean.
  3. Classroom reference books shall be ordered through the IMC.
