Transfer of Credit from another College to HTC
Lower division credits earned at a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association will be considered for transfer toward general and/or technical education requirements. Any college level course can be considered for transfer toward General Education and/or Technical Studies Electives. Technical courses more than 5 years old are not eligible for transfer. College level courses in which a student has received a grade of A, B, C, D, P, or S shall be considered for transfer evaluation.

Students pursuing an A.A.S. degree, diploma, or certificate at HTC who have already earned a M.A., M.S., B.A., B.S., A.A., A.S., A.A.S., or have completed the Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) from a regionally accredited college or university may receive a block transfer to satisfy the General Education requirements of their degree, diploma, or certificate. However, if the HTC degree, diploma, or certificate requires a specific math or computer literacy course and the student has not completed a general education math or computer literacy course as part of their previous degree, the student will need to do so in order to satisfy their HTC degree, diploma, or certificate requirements.

When a student is not eligible for a block transfer or when transferring individual courses to satisfy specific A.A.S. degree, diploma and/or certificate requirements, courses will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Courses with a content match to the required HTC course can be transferred and used to satisfy specific course requirements in their A.A.S. degree, diploma, and/or certificate program.

Minnesota Transfer Curriculum guidelines will be used to categorize transferred courses into one of ten MnTC goal areas. Credit for coursework that does not fit into any goal area will not be granted.

A block transfer of up to eight credits of related technical courses may be granted for incoming college level courses for which there is not a similar HTC course. Credit granted will apply to technical electives. Final approval of this transfer will be at the discretion of program/faculty.

If a student’s cumulative GPA at the sending institution is less than 2.0, D grades will not be accepted in transfer from that school. No F grades will be accepted in transfer. Technical courses must have been completed within the past five years to be considered for transfer. Transfer grades are not calculated in a student’s GPA.

Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC)
The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) is intended to help students transfer credits within public colleges and universities in Minnesota. MnTC courses are designed to give students a college-level general education curricula that focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to support the technical courses in their A.A.S. degree program and to be successful in today’s society.

Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) at Hennepin Technical College
Hennepin Technical College offers A.A.S. degrees in many of its programs. By definition, an A.A.S. degree at HTC requires 18 or more credits of general education courses from at least three different goal areas of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum.

The MnTC Goal Areas are as follows.

  • MnTC Goal 1: Communications
  • MnTC Goal 2: Critical Thinking
  • MnTC Goal 3: Natural Sciences
  • MnTC Goal 4: Mathematical/Logical Reasoning
  • MnTC Goal 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • MnTC Goal 6: Humanities and Fine Arts
  • MnTC Goal 7: Human Diversity
  • MnTC Goal 8: Global Awareness
  • MnTC Goal 9: Ethical and Civic Responsibility
  • MnTC Goal 10: People and the Environment

Program instructors, with the guidance of their advisory committees, have selected MnTC courses that are provided by the general education department. Questions regarding the MnTC should be directed to the Transfer Specialist or a college counselor.

Veteran’s Military Training
College credit for prior military training and experience may be awarded. The standards of the American Council on Education or equivalent standards for awarding credit and the current Hennepin Technical College transfer policy will be used to determine course transfer.

High School Articulation
Students who enroll at Hennepin Technical College may request to have Minnesota High School Tech Prep College Credits, which apply to their major, entered on their HTC college transcript. The students have up to five years from the date the Minnesota High School Tech Prep College Credit course(s) was completed, with a grade of “B” or better, to formally request college credit for the articulated course(s). Refer to the HTC website for the complete procedure for “Transfer of Minnesota High School Tech Prep College Credits to Hennepin Technical College.”

Residency Credits
To be eligible for an A.A.S. degree, diploma, or certificate, a student must earn one-third of the credit requirements for a diploma or certificate and 20 of the credits for an A.A.S. degree at Hennepin Technical College.

Transfer of Credit to Another Post-Secondary Institution
Credit courses in majors at Hennepin Technical College are intended to provide employment skills and, in some situations, transfer to other colleges. The number of credits that may be transferred is determined by the receiving institution. A.A.S. degrees, diplomas, and certificates do not typically transfer as a block to four-year institutions.

Credit Transfer to Hennepin Technical College

We’re Here To Assist You
Hennepin Technical College strives to put students first.  A Transfer Specialist is available to assist you with the process of transferring credits from other colleges.  Hennepin Technical College’s transfer guidelines are used to determine which credits will be accepted from other institutions.

Understanding How Transfer of Credits Works
The receiving college or university decides what credits transfer and whether those credits meet its degree requirements.  The accreditation of both your sending and your receiving institution can affect the transfer of the credits you earn.

Institutions accept credits from courses and programs like those they offer. They look for similarity in course goals, content, and level.

Applying for Admission
Application for admission to the college is always the first step in transferring.  Fill out the college application as early as you can and submit it with the $20 application fee.  You can access an application on line at the HTC Admissions web site.

Request that official transcripts be sent from every institution you have attended.  You might be required to provide a high school transcript or GED test scores as well.

Hennepin Technical College Transfer Guidelines
Only credits earned at regionally accredited colleges will be considered for transfer.

Students pursuing an A.A.S. degree, diploma or certificate at HTC, who have already earned a M.A., M.S., B.A., B.S., A.A., or A.A.S., may receive a block transfer to satisfy the General Education requirements of their degree, diploma or certificate. Some exceptions may apply in the area of math and computer literacy requirements.

Courses may be evaluated on a course-by-course basis.  Requirements are:

  • Transfer courses should be 75% match in content and goals to the HTC course(s).
  • Transfer courses should be equal or greater in credit value to the HTC course(s).
  • Student must have achieved the letter grade of C or better (D grades do transfer into most majors if the student has an overall GPA of 2.0 or better at the previous college).
  • Technical courses must be less than five years old.

(all students in the LPN Program with transfer credits should meet with the Transfer Specialist regarding specific program transfer requirements.)

Student choice elective credit – students may select any college level credit course to apply to the technical elective portion of the A.A.S. degree, diploma or certificate based on the following schedule:

  • 64 or more credit program – 5 student choice elective credits
  • 63-48 credit program – 4 student choice elective credits
  • 47 or less credits – 3 student choice elective credits.

Block Transfer Information
Students pursuing an A.A.S. degree, diploma, or certificate at HTC who have already earned a M.A., M.S., B.A., B.S., A.A., or A.A.S., from a regionally accredited college or university may receive a block transfer to satisfy the General Education requirements of their degree, diploma, or certificate.

A block transfer of up to eight credits of related technical courses may be granted for incoming college level courses for which there is not a similar HTC course.  Credit granted will apply to technical electives.  Final approval of this transfer will be at the discretion of the program/faculty

A block transfer of up to nine credits may be granted for incoming college level general education courses for which there is not a similar HTC course.  Credit granted will apply to general education electives.  Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) guidelines at: www.mntransfer.org/MnTC/mntccourses.html will be used to categorize transferred courses into one of ten MnTC goal areas.  Credit for coursework that does not fit into any goal area will not be granted.

Your Rights as a Transfer Student
If you have questions about your evaluation, call the Office of Admissions and ask to speak with the credit evaluator.  Ask why judgments were made about specific courses.  Many concerns can be cleared up if you understand why decisions were made. If not satisfied, you can appeal.  See “Your Rights as a Transfer Student” below.

1. A clear, understandable statement of an institutions transfer policy.

2. A fair credit review and an explanation of why credits were or were not accepted.

3. A copy of the formal appeals process. Usual appeal steps are:

  • Student fills out an appeals form. Supplemental information you provide to reviewers – a syllabus, course description, or reading list – can help.

  • Department or committee will review

  • Student receives, in writing, the outcome of the appeal

  • Student can appeal decision to the Registrar

4. At your request, a review of your eligibility for financial aid or scholarships.

5. For help with your transfer questions or problems, see the Transfer Specialist.

6. For information on how courses transfer from one MnSCU institution to another:
