Interlibrary Loan Guide

If you’ve never checked anything out from the library or your student ID is new, you must have library staff activate your student ID. Then you will be able to log in and request materials. |
Requesting Items Found in MnPALS:
1. From the library homepage, click on MnPALS/HTC’s Online Catalog.
2. Under “Libraries and Collections - select a library catalog” choose “All MnPALS Libraries.” (near the bottom of the list)
3. Search for item.
4. Click on the title to display the record for the desired item in MnPALS.
5. Click the “ILL Request” button at the upper right of the record.
6. Fill in the following boxes:
7. Click the “ILL Request” button again and the ILL form will pop up.
8. Towards the bottom of the form choose a pickup/delivery location (EPC or BPC) and fill in the “Not Needed After” box using the calendar. Choose a date at least a week (7 days) from the day of your request. After 4-5 business days, stop by the library to see if your request has arrived.
9. You may add any additional notes but this may slow down your request.
10. When all the information has been entered click the “Go” button.
11. At the top of the next screen you will find the message “Your request has been entered with ID…” Close this screen.
12. If you need to cancel your request follow the instructions below under “Canceling ILL Requests and Displaying Items Linked to Your Patron Record.”
Requesting Items NOT Found in MnPALS:
To request items electronically, you must fill out a blank request form through MnPALS.
1. From MnPALS, click on “Your borrowing record.”
2. Type in your barcode number (14-digit number on the back of your student ID card).
3. Type in your password (your last name or first 8 letters of your last name).
4. Click on “Interlibrary Loan” link in the green bar above your name.
5. Choose Book or Journal.
6. Fill in the form completely; incomplete requests will be denied.
7. Click on the “Go” button.
8. At the top of the next screen you will find the message “Your request has been entered with ID…” Close this screen.
9. If you need to cancel your request, follow the instructions below under “Canceling ILL Requests and Displaying Items Linked to Your Patron Record.”
Requesting Items through the MnLINK Gateway (your access to additional libraries in Minnesota):
1. From the library homepage select “MnLINK.”
2. Click “Search the MnLINK Gateway” located at the upper left or bottom right of the page.
3. Click the “Sign In” button and enter your barcode number (14-digit number on the back of you student ID card) and your password (your last name, unless you have changed it)
4. Leave the “Pickup location” on “1. My Library”
5. Click “Sign In”
6. Search for the item you wish to borrow.
7. Once you have displayed the item, click on the “Get it!” button.
8. Click on “request via ILL.”
9. For “Pick up Location” you must choose “Managed by MnPALS”
10. Towards the bottom of the form under “Additional Information” is “This item is not needed after:” It will generate a date 6 months from the date of your request. You can change this but you should put at least 7 days from the date of your request.
11. At the top or the bottom of the screen click “Submit.”
12. Request result box will have the message “Your request has been accepted.”
13. If you need to cancel your request, go to “My Account” then “My Requests” and this will bring you to the MnPALS “Your Borrowing Record” screen. Follow the instructions below under Canceling ILL Requests and Displaying Items Linked to Your Patron Record.
ILL Borrowing Restrictions
Libraries that participate in Interlibrary Loan do so voluntarily.
Access to another library’s materials is a privilege,
not a right. Each library determines which materials it will and
will not lend.
Some materials are not available through ILL and should not be requested. These restricted materials include:
Most books are available through ILL. Photocopies of periodical (magazine) articles are available subject to copyright restrictions, which are as follows:
Borrower’s Responsibilities:
Canceling ILL Requests and Displaying Items Linked to Your Patron Record:
1. From MnPALS, go to the “Your Borrowing Record” at the top of the screen.
2. Type in your barcode number (14-digit number on the back of your student ID card).
3. Type in your password (your last name or first 8 letters of your last name).
4. Click on “Log On”
5. Click on “lLL active requests”
6. Click on the number to the left of the title of the ILL you want to cancel.
7. At the bottom of the next screen click “Cancel Request.”
8. The screen will change and after “Status” it will say “Cancelled.”
9. As you close out, there should be a message that says “You do not have any outstanding Inter-Library Loan requests.”
10. You can also click on “Loans” to see what you have checked out.
