Interpersonal Communication

Course Description

This course focuses on the practical and theoretical concepts of human communication and the styles of communication used in academic, social and professional environments. Students will learn the characteristics and process of interpersonal communication including perception, speech and language, non-verbal behaviors, listening and feedback, conflict recognition and resolution, small group dynamics, the ethics of interpersonal communication and relationship development and maintenance. In this course you will learn to communicate more effectively in all settings.

Qualifying score on reading assessment test OR ENGL0921. Basic computer literacy skills required

Course Goals

The following goals will be addressed in the course.
Identify the elements of the communication process
Identify variables contributing to interpersonal competence
Evaluate appropriate and effective interpersonal behavior
Identify the characteristics of nonverbal communication
Apply appropriate perception checking skills
Use responsible and owned language
Identify effective listening skills
Provide feedback in conversations
Apply constructive conflict management techniques
Identify gender communication styles
Compare cultural differences

Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include fifteen-sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty - thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the "Course Credits" section of this syllabus for the credit breakdown.
