 Course Description

This course is an introduction to logic, the study of reasoning. Students will investigate what an `argument` is in logic, which different forms of argument are good ones, which are not, and which rules to follow in constructing and evaluating arguments. Students will also master some useful problem-solving methodologies relevant to the workplace.

Qualifying score on writing assessment test OR ENGL1021 or ENGL1026. Basic computer literacy skills required

 Course Goals

Evaluate definitions
Explain fallacious reasoning
Evaluate inductive arguments for generalizations
Evaluate inductive arguments for analogies
Evaluate inductive arguments for causation
Evaluate inductive arguments from authority
Evaluate validity of deductive arguments
Evaluate soundness of deductive arguments
Defend a position on a given topic
Apply problem-solving methodologies

 Course Scheduling

The scheduled hours of instruction include fifteen-sixteen hours for each lecture credit, thirty - thirty-two hours for each lab credit and forty hours for each credit of supervised occupational experience (SOE). Lecture credit may include formal or impromptu lectures, demonstrations or discussions with the entire class or with small groups or individuals. Refer to the "Course Credits" section of this syllabus for the credit breakdown.
