Opportunity in Bloom: HTC Graduate Returns as Instructor

When she graduated from HTC’s Floral program in 1997, Tiffany Hammond had no idea that she would return to the college as an instructor. She established a successful career working for Forever Floral in Coon Rapids and Ramsey, where she used her creative talents to design beautiful arrangements of fresh flowers. Then in 2000, she had the opportunity to join HTC as a part-time instructor, and that provided another outlet for her creativity.

“When I got the opportunity to teach, it opened my eyes to how exciting it can be,” said Hammond enthusiastically. “Most florists you meet are very passionate about what they do, and it’s very fulfilling to see that in budding florists.”

Now a full-time instructor in the Floral program, Hammond is bringing her industry experience to the classroom, adding new courses and revamping existing ones to provide students with the most up-to-date training. Students may earn a diploma or an occupational certificate from the Floral program, which prepares them for workplace success with training on topics from fresh flower design to visual merchandising and customer service. The program also includes hands-on experience, including an internship at a local floral shop.

As for Hammond’s favorite part of her HTC training, it was the opportunity to learn new techniques and design styles to create dynamic floral compositions. “Creating floral designs in the classroom allows for constructive feedback,” said Hammond, “and that really built my confidence in my creativity and helped me learn the best way to do things.” Now she shares that enthusiasm with her own students at HTC.

“The floral industry is constantly evolving and we bring what’s new and exciting to the program, along with teaching the basics,” said Hammond. With the skills and knowledge she gained as a student at HTC, plus a decade of industry experience, Tiffany Hammond is glad that her career brought her back to the Floral program, where opportunity is always in bloom.
